Mission Statement

The Washington County Library System, which includes the Washington County-Jonesborough Library and the Gray Library Branch, provides materials and services to help county residents obtain information meeting their personal, educational, and professional needs. Special emphasis is placed on maintaining a diversified collection to support the interests and needs of all library patrons, especially in the area of historical and genealogical research.

The library also provides a challenging environment for young children, designed to promote interest in, and appreciation for, reading and learning.

Getting a library card at the Washington County Libraries is free and easy!

If you are a resident of Washington County or the surrounding area, you can receive a free library card from the Jonesborough or Gray Library.

You must provide a photo ID, such as a driver’s license, with your name and current address. If your ID does not have your current address on it, bring a canceled letter, a receipt from a utility company, sales or rental agreement, etc., that has your name and current address.

Temporary cards are also available for those who are planning a longer stay but proof of current local address is required in addition to proof of permanent address.

A parent and/or guardian ID is required for children to receive a card, and will be considered responsible for materials checked out on that child’s card.

Loan periods:
  • 2 weeks – Books, audiobooks & non-current magazines
  • 7 days    – DVDs (limited to 4 per family)
Renewals:
  • 2 renewals – Books, audiobooks & non-current magazines
  • Non-renewable- High demand titles, books on Hold, and DVDs

Eligible library materials that are not overdue may be renewed using the online catalog. Materials may also be renewed by phone.*

*Please have your card number ready so that we may assist you in a timely manner.

Returning Items
  • Borrowed library materials may be returned to either the Gray or Jonesborough Library.
  • All types of materials may be returned in our outdoor drops.
  • Be sure to return each kind of material in the appropriately labeled outdoor drop.
Overdue, Lost, or Damaged Materials, & Other Fees

Materials that are kept past their due date & other fines & fees are charged at the following rates:

DVDs $1.00 per day
Non-regional Interlibrary Loans $1.00 per day
All Other Materials $.15 per day
Items Returned in Wrong Outdoor Drop $5.00 per item
Lost or Damaged Materials ** Replacement costs + $10.00 processing fee
Meeting Room (basic fee only, inquire for more information) $10.00 refundable deposit

*If you have been notified of available reserved materials & fail to pick them up, a fee of $.50 per item may be charged for materials not from the Washington County Library. Patrons who notify the library of special circumstances that keep them from picking up their materials may have the fee waived by the Director or Branch Managers.

**If a lost item is returned within six months, the cost of the item will be refunded but a $5 fine will be added to your account. If an item is damaged but still usable then the patron will be assessed the cost of repair.

If an item was borrowed from another library, the lending library’s policy regarding lost, damaged, and/or retuned-for-refunds materials will be followed.
